We’ve all been transported somewhere else by the smell: the fragrance of magnolia in brand New Orleans, a cologne that is ex-lover’s the G train, faded perfume embedded in to a sweater. Our olfactory memories are certain and visceral, because fragrance may be the sense most linked with our memory and feeling. Perfume, like our clothing or precious precious jewelry or hairstyle, is a car of pleasure and self-expression.
It can also function like a type of armor—an olfactory protection in the whole world.
When I became a residential district organizer in Bushwick, I’d end workshops having a meditation and scented oil blend that other organizers applied between their palms and inhaled. This moment had been everyone’s part that is favorite of workshop: Organizing had been emotionally taxing for them, but few talked freely about their psychological state; self-care arrived after social justice. Incorporating fragrance into our work permitted a separation that is brief life’s struggles.
For females who’ve been in jail, numerous facets of self-expression are stripped away from them. As being a perfumer, we wondered: So what does it suggest to be rejected something as easy, yet so significant, as one’s perfume in jail?
82 percent of incarcerated ladies have actually faced real and/or abuse that is sexual their life ahead of their amount of time in jail, and several experience physical violence in, too. How can the past is remembered by us through painful fragrance memories, and just how might a perfume become an item of healing?
I inquired these concerns as a place of departure, using classes from my arranging work and connecting them to perfumery for a task I called Mala, this means a garland of plants in my own mom tongue, Bengali; in Spanish, it indicates “a bad girl.” I needed to interrogate the thought of an alleged bad girl, and I also desired to re-imagine her memory as a full time income art.
